According to a study done in 1999, nitrate, a commonly used fertilizer, can cause endocrine, immune and nervous system malfunctions. Ingesting fertilizer from the bag can cause death, especially in children and pets, so be cautious when using the product around them. Reproductive problems have also been linked to fertilizer poisoning.
